The best announcement we could possibly have made

We’re ecstatic to be able to say this but thanks to our great ongoing relationship with our friends at NMRM, who own the premises, we have been able to secure the ability to remain open in our home at Boathouse No.6 until the end of March. That’s a full month of films on the big screen beyond what we had previously expected, given the works that will be taking place during 2025/26 to hugely improve the venue. We are still working on alternative plans for screenings during the closure period, but this extension means we can continue to bring you the best in popular, independent, overseas and classic cinema in our natural home. Great news for us, for our brilliant volunteers and most especially for you, our valued audience.

Here is this week’s timetable. The bar opens at 6pm for the 7pm screenings.

A French woman turns to dating apps as a remedy for her unsatisfying marriage. Subtitles.

It's Raining Men

Thursday 30th January at 7pm

It’s Raining Men features a fantasy scene that pays homage to the Weather Girls disco classic. With that title, you can undoubtedly guess the subject of writer-director Caroline Vignal’s comedy, and if not the original French title, Iris et les Hommes, should clear up any ambiguity. France’s comedy sensation Laura Calamy plays Iris, a woman with a successful life, career and marriage who finds herself strangely dissatisfied and downloads a dating app for married cheaters. Et voila, it’s raining men in a torrent of classic French sex comedy scenarios featuring awkward and amusing trysts. Very much reflecting a quintessential European view of relationships, this is an incredibly watchable and enjoyable evening out.

In French with English subtitles.

Cult Classic: Spirited Away

Friday 31st January at 7pm

Among his many great films our Cult Classic: Spirited Away stands out as one of the very best from writer-director-animator extraordinaire Hayao Miyazaki. Hard to believe it’s a quarter of a century old as the animation still exceeds anything else around. A classically Japanese tale of a young girl, Chihiro, who becomes enmeshed in a fantasy land of spirits, dragons and witches, the film skilfully deals also with issues like consumerism, environmentalism and juxtaposing traditional and modern Japanese culture. But ultimately it’s the ravishing visuals that have cemented it as one of the all-time great animations and an incredible fourth place on the list of the BBC's 100 Greatest Films of the 21st Century.

In Japanese with English subtitles.

A gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her.

Nosferatu

Saturday 1st February at 7pm

The latest addition to the progeny of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Nosferatu is the third movie of that name after the seminal 1922 silent from F.W. Murnau, which invented the horror film genre, and the sublime Herzog remake from 1979. Clearly one of the fascinations of writer-director Robert Eggers new version is how it compares to its predecessors. Having Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Bill Skarsgard (as the vampire) and Willem Dafoe (in the professorial van Helsing-type role) is not a bad start. The Hollywood Reporter reflects the critical consensus, calling it “exciting, repulsive and beautiful…hypnotically scary as it grabs you by the throat [not literally, we hope] and never lets go”. Also featuring Ralph Ineson, Finchy from The Office (wha?)

Up Next Week:

Nickel Boys, We Live In Time, Babygirl, The Goonies

Coming Soon:

The people have spoken. You, our beloved audience, voted incredibly quickly and in large numbers in response to the Valentine’s Day screening poll we announced last week. It is great to know that there’s such an enthusiastic and engaged group of cinema goers out there! The overwhelming majority asked us to show Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise on the evening of Friday 14th February – a sublime and bittersweet romance starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy as the two young people who meet and…but why are we telling you, you voted for it! We look forward to seeing you on the night. To paraphrase the late Steve Wright in respect of his Sunday morning show, ‘No.6 is doin’ it for lovers!’
