No.6 Cinema and the University of Portsmouth Centre for Blue Governance (CBG) are proud to announce that the award-winning film Io Capitano which explores the theme of migration and the plight of migrants on their perilous journey across Africa to reach European shores will be screened on Thursday 28 November at 7pm.

Directed by Matteo Garrone, the film portrays the harrowing experiences of two Senegalese youths, Seydou and Yaya who leave their homes in Dakar to reach Europe to pursue their dreams. It is inspired by actual stories of migrants who cross the desert enduring humiliation and pain at the hands of criminals along the land routes across the Sahara desert to reach the northern shores of the island continent. Against the violent reality of human trafficking and modern slavery, it also portrays a story of friendship, resilience and survival in a hostile environment.

To introduce the central theme of migration, identities and cinematic journeys, the screening will be preceded by a short presentation by the CBG Labour and Human Rights Theme Leads, namely Professor Dr Leïla Choukroune (Professor of International Law and Director of the Centre for Global Justice and Rights) and Dr Sophie Quintin (Maritime security expert).
